Gold Records

Gold Records have existed for decades in order to recognize exceptional record sales figures in the music business. The first Gold Record came into being as RCA Victor rewarded Glenn Miller on the successful sales of "Chattanooga Choo Choo".

They simply sprayed one of the records with gold lacquer and presented it to Glen Miller during a live radio broadcast. Since then the Recording Industry Association of America adopted and trademarked the Gold Record.

The top selling Album of all time is The Eagles Greatest Hits (1971-1975) with 26 million copies sold.

Other mega-popular albums include Billy Joel's Collection of Hits, Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin, Thriller by Michael Jackson and The Wall by Pink Floyd.

For overall Album sales of all time, the award goes to the Beatles as the most successful reocrding act of all time with sales of over 111 million albums in the U.S. alone.
